Listening

An Important interpersonal skill

Listening is an action where we will be taking in information by attending to the message from the speaker through verbal and non-verbal medium

Listening is a great skill and much needed one when we are willing to develop healthy interpersonal relationships, On a daily basis many people trust us and share a lot of information to us and it is very much important to be aware of the listening types if we choose to be supportive to the person sharing the information.Majority of the roles taken by the listener can be divided into 5 ways

1) Advising and Moralizing

Ex: When speaker says “ I feel guilty about missing today’s deadline”

A listener in this role responds....
“Yeah, u should feel that as what u did is totally not acceptable and because of people like you many works will not complete on time “

2) Analyzing and interpreting

Ex: “ ok... the reason why you are feeling guilty is because you believe missing the deadline is wrong and as you think you did wrong you feel bad about it “

3) Questioning and probing

Ex : “ Oh, when is the deadline ?”
“ why do feel that way?”
“ Is your manager going to be angry ?”

4) Supporting and comforting
“ hmm... , things like this happens all the time and night is darkest before a bright day so stick around budy ...good days are waiting”

5) Understanding and paraphrasing

“ oh...hmmm I understand that u feel guilty that you missed the deadline which u feel is more important ... “

Each type of listening has to be used based on the speakers need and situation ....
which role to be taken can be learned through experience and asking ourselves what type of listener you want at that moment and being supportive ....
